What is Music?

The most common Lay-man definition of music is anything that has sound and is pleasing to the ears. This definition is most probably what most Nigerians on the Street will tell you.
Some music researchers have described music as the creative arrangement of sounds some others define it as soft poetry set into Rhythm.
In my own words, I would define music as an art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds in a harmonious or expressive way. Music in its aesthetic formation could be purely vocals, pure instrumental or a good blend of vocals and instrumentation,
Sociologists have described music as a unifying factor because it breeds the spirit of social interaction. Psychologically music steers the warrior in us.

Types / Genres of music

There are many forms of music in terms of their style, message, delivery and otherwise. From a religions perspective, it is important to note that there are 2 basic types of music namely Gospel and secular music.

Gospel music: is involved with a beautiful blend of vocals and instrumental which is directed with its message to either preaching God’s word, greatness or exacting, worshipping and praising God. Gospel music can exist in different genres of music.

Secular music: is that kind of vocal and instrumental mix that is not concerned with religion. It is more worldly than sacred. This also comes in different forms and genres of music.

There are other types of music which may be educative with its content and others also may be provocative inciting violence.
Music in its gospel, secular, educative, provocative, and other forms is never stereotyped with a particular genre of music. It can be made in different genres.

Genres of Music

Juju: This is a popular form of music in the south-western part of Nigeria. It evolved from what was then known as palm wine music
Juju music is structured on percussive Rhythms, Strings arrangement and keyboard

The Lyrical pattern is flexible and adaptable to any occasion. Juju music got real international recognition in 1991 when K.S.A became the very first home-grown artiste to be nominated for a Grammy in the world music category.

Afro Beat: It is regarded as authentic African music because it is a product of ethno-musical experimentation inspired by political activism This genre of music is structured on multi-dimensional proportions horns arrangement and guitar pieces (base, acoustic, rhythm, guitar).
In the midst of these is the larger than life image of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. a.k.a Abami Eda, Baba Fela with help from Tony Alibi Allen, the best drummer in the world.

Hi-Life: There has been a raging controversy as to origin of hi-life music. Henry document evidence and interviews show clearly that Hi-Life evolved from Ghana and not Nigeria as it is believed. There was a lot of controversy in the 60s and 70s between both Countries which led to the evolution of hi-life musicians like Rex-Lawson and Victor Uwaifor.

Classical Music: Started in ancient Greece and Rome as a mark of entertainment for Royalty. Only the kings could listen or enjoy the live performances of classical musicians. Classical music is formal in beauty, composition and delivery. Professor Las Ekwueme, Late Steve Rose, Adams Fibreresima are examples of Nigerian classic musicians. Ayo Bankole became the first Nigerian to sing a Christmas Carol (Kere si mesi, odun de odun olowo)
Also Beethoven and Mozart are examples of foreign classic music.

Hip hop Music: Is a form of music, dance and arts created by youngsters of African descent. Hip hop has assumed the stature of a universal culture with growing fan base and massive financial investment. Hip hop is life and full of street poetry.

There are other genres of music lie Rap, Rock, Blues, Jazz, and soul music which are similar to hip hop in terms of evolution but differs individually in tempo.

WHAT IS MUSIC PRESENTATION

Music presentation entails the discretional delivery of music and musical information to the listening and viewing audience. Music presentation is an art that thrives on knowledge, informed familiarity, showmanship, flexibility, humour, poise, know how and character.
The mood of music presentation is usually infections, inspirational and witty. The language of music presentation is simple, joyous and apt. in some specialized music programmes, the language is formal, cultivative and unhurried.

WHO IS A MUSIC PRESENTER

A music presenter is that broadcaster who has a responsibility to discretionally feed, direct and guide his or her audience with good music and musical information from any broadcast station be it radio or television.

THE ROLE THE MUSIC PRESENTER PLAYS

The music presenter plays a very important role in determining how the music that is aired on radio and television affects the children, youth, adults and the society at large.

Different music presenters around the world have their preferences as regards the kind of music they listen to and play on television or radio for their target audience.

Since music comes in different forms, genres, delivery and with different messages, it is up to the music presenter to determine discretionally what kind of music should be played and at what time, season or in what mood the music should be aired.

For instance, a bank employee waking early in the morning, turning on his radio while preparing for work might find a very high-tempo party track being played as disturbing and out of place.

Also the presenter has a major role in serving as a guide to help people especially children with songs that have moral, inspiring, educative and informative ethics rather than vulgar, uninspiring and explicitly disapproving songs.

                         WHO ARE THE SOCIETY

Society refers to a large group of people who organize themselves in such a way that they make collective decisions on how things are done. A society is made up of smaller groups / community within an environment.

Factors that combine to make or define a society include cultural elements of the people; beliefs, values, food, dress patterns, music, dance, religion e.t.c as well as laws or regulations that govern the society. A society therefore has to do with the people who organize themselves within an environment and conduct their affairs in accordance with what is generally accepted by all or prescribed by laws.

EFFECTS OF MUSIC ON THE SOCIETY

Music has positive and negative effects on the society and the people living in it. It will be quintessential to briefly explain how children, adult, youths, broadcasting and marketing as part of the society are being affected negatively of positively.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF MUSIC AND ITS PRESENTATION ON THE SOCIETY

Here are a few of the negative impacts:
Neglect of cultural tradition: Music has contributed immensely to a gradual neglect of traditional and cultural values in Nigeria over the years. Hip hop music in particular, encourages most Nigerian youths and little kids to imbibe the practices of the western world. Nigerian youths tend to copy the western culture in terms of dress pattern, dance and even character.
Incitement to Violence: Music in its provocative form which is found mostly In Juju and Fuji music in Nigeria encourages grudges, grievance and conflict which would eventually lead to violence. Also Rap music tends to encourage violence because most rappers especially American preach thuggery, guns, violence and gangsterism in a bid to prove that they are the best.
Instilling of Immoral values on children and youths: The kind of music children listen to at a tender age goes a long way in determinating the king of person they turn out to be in future. Music with explicit lyrics and indecent content can instill immoral values on the youth and children at home.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF MUSIC AND ITS PRESENTATIONON THE SOCIETY

Social Integrator: Music and music presentation helps to build stronger relationships between members of a society. For instance, a person calls during a music programme making a shoutout and dedicating a love song to his or her friend. Also a music presenter decides to play “ONE LOVE” by Bob Marley for his listening populace. This music will go a long way in inspiring people to show love to each other.
Lesson Teacher:  Music in its didactic form could help to instill positive and useful moral values on people and children especially.

A music presenter might be encouraging his or her esteemed listeners or viewers to always do good because “good begets good” and decides to play “ESE RERE” by Orlando Owoh. This music will help some one at home planning evil to have a change of heart.
Soothing Healer: Music in its therapeutic form could help to lift the listeners mood. A man has no job and is faced with trials and has no one to turn to can get a soothing relief from Don Moen’s “God will make a way” played on a musical programme on radio. Another type of therapeutic music is “Three Little Birds” by Late Bob Marley.
Motivating Function: Music can also serve as a source of motivation when it feels like one’s strength is gone. “Stand up for your Right”, “World champion” by General Pype are songs that can help ginger an individual to achieve the best.
Broadcasting Function: Music is important to broadcast in general and not in musical programmes particularly. Music can be used as background soundtrack for educative or even political programmes on radio. It could also be used as filters and signature tunes during broadcasting.
Marketing Function: Music has a big impact on the economy and marketing in particular because music is used to run adverts on radio and television.

CONCLUSION

As it is illustrated in the course of this project work, music and its presentation has a lot of impact on the society.

After highlighting the role the presenter plays earlier in this work, it is important to know that the presenter should selve as a guide who presents programmes and plays music that is positively affecting the, children, youths, adult and the society at large.
